The Healthy Junk Chronicles: Bulk items are you friend

Let’s face it…healthy foods can be pretty expensive! Sometimes, I feel like I’m buy Louis Vutton instead of “organic”, “all natural”, “grass fed”, “gluten-free” foods. I didn’t post for a while because I was racking my brains trying to figure out the best ways to get you great food…at a budget.

Today, it hit me in the head. BUY BULK! Now I’m sure you heard this before. As a matter of fact, I know you heard buying bulk is the way to go if you want to enjoy organic food but do you know how many items come in bulk, especially if you know where to look?

I thought of this today. I went into one of my favorite food stores in Manhattan, Integral Yoga Natural Foods, craving their Cherry Vanilla Granola. I got the idea from my boyfriend to eat it like cereal (I also have this late love for Rice “Drink”…we’ll talk about that later). I ended up buying $14 worth of the stuff. At first, I was like, “damn this is expensive.” But when I saw how much I put in the bag (a about 4 lbs.), a huge light bulb came over my head.

This is going to last me a super long time and it won’t spoil. Should I really be upset? Especially when this great tasting food is around $5/lb?

I know someone from Brooklyn is saying, “girl, that’s expensive.” Not for NYC!! It’s a damn good price for the West Village and I’m not mad. I then realized how many things I buy in bulk: herbs, rice, pasta, even organic maple syrup! And at the end of the day, I save a lot of money. Hell, I can even get detergent in bulk if I want too (thank goodness for DIY…baking soda, apple cider vinegar, water, lemon juice, etc)!!

So if you want to find out where you can get items in bulk, here’s a quick guide:

Your local food co-op. You’ll be surprised how many food co-ops are popping up throughout NYC. Click here to find out.

Your local health food store/natural market. Integral Yoga Natural Foods and other stores like it know the power of bulk. Sure, they can sell that expensive stuff but if they want repeat customers, they will have bulk in many items. If you don’t see it, ask for it. Trust me, then will go through hell and high water to make sure they get it for you (or at least tell you where to go).

At the end of the day, when you have to deal with mega chains like Whole Foods (also known as Whole Paycheck), competition among smaller stores makes no sense. Whole Foods doesn’t have much when it comes to bulk because they need the big brands to keep them afloat. So support your local store, save money, and still maintain your health.

Who I am and Why I am here!

Hello everyone!!

It’s been a while since I have posted to this blog and I would really love to get back in the swing of things! So let me start getting back into this blog with…why I even created this blog in the first place!

I am a Holistic Health Coach, Yoga Instructor, and all around Health Nut. One of the many issues people face when it comes to being healthier is the with organic and healthy food. “It’s too expensive,” they say. And it’s not just expensive food. Organic and all natural beauty products, household products and other items we need everyday are just too expensive when it comes to getting it without chemicals. So for me, these items are called “luxuries.”

This blog is a way for all of us, especially in the New York City area, to get these luxuries at a less expensive price, create some of these items yourself (DIY, making it inexpensive) or spending that money to get what you want and need as a healthy alternative. I want to offer my review on products that seem expensive or costly but are worth the cost as well. 

I call the blog “Healthy Junk” because this journey started as a way for me to offer you healthier ways to enjoy your “junk” – whether it be junk food or other “Junk” items – things we want but really don’t need. However, in my mind, it’s so much more than that. 

I’m going to keep the name “Healthy Junk” just because I love the title and the feel of it…that hasn’t changed. This oxymoron sticks. But know this…we live in a time where it’s hard to maintain a lifestyle that has us free of “junk,” in this case, chemicals. I want to make that easy…not only for me but for you too!!

 I hope you’re ready to take this journey AGAIN with me!

Healthy Junk Chronicles: The Spark of Health

Hi everyone!

I know I’ve been gone for a while but instead of focusing on “what was” and “I should have,” WE need to pay attention to the present moment and be grateful for what we have and don’t have…

Presently, what I now have is a Magic Bullet! As you can see in the picture above (I took it for my instagram page), before I received the green juice, I had to get a lesson in how to create it from my mom.

The funniest things about my lesson are:

  1. My mom talked me through it like she’s the host on an infomercial.
  2. She had this unbelievable energy and passion I have not seen in years.
  3. She’s been doing this for 2 weeks!

Junk News: Healthy Substitutes for the Junk We Love!!

This is a great article from “young Chicago authors,” that lean towards the High School crowd. The only point I would like to make is that you need to be very specific with teens at times, especially since they are prone to hear what they want to hear OR will figure out ways to go around what you say.

Take this quote for instance:

“If there are so many available junk substitutes why aren’t people eating them?  Although there are many substitutes for junk food, it’s hard for us to break away from bad habits. I don’t expect that right after you read this you’re going to throw all the junk food out of your house, but gradually try to eat healthier food more often.”

This is great for teens (and adults) to understand. It makes us think about all of our habits and do our own work  to help ourselves.

Now take a look at this:

“For lunch, try making your own salad. It’s cheaper than buying a lunch and it tastes even better if you make it the morning of. You can add tasty ingredients like mandarin oranges and dried cranberries, both of which are sweet yet healthy.”

Now making a salad for lunch is a great idea! It’s great for a teen to learn how to be independent with their food choices anbe serious about health. The only issue is that the author needs to specify to be careful with salad dressing!! Salads aren’t unhealthy!! But too much salad dressing can add to calories and at times have ingredients that aren’t conducive to health. Since most teens (and adults) are sugar & salt fanatics, they will practically drown the poor salad with dressing to make sure that it tastes just the way they like it! Not a healthy move!!

Overall, I love this article!! It gives just the right amount of information and leaves questions in the reader’s mind. Questions that the reader will have to answer for him or herself. You can always find a Health Coach (such as myself) to help you answer all your questions and allow you to DO RIGHT FORYOURSELF!!

Always remember…the next time you consume junk, make sure it’s Healthy Junk!

High Cost of Health Food Means Kids Eat More Junk

If I were a parent reading this article, it would raise many more questions than answers:

  1. How can I buy healthier choices for my kids and save money?
  2. How does increased prices on raw materials (milk, corn, etc.) affect food prices in supermarkets?
  3. How can I introduce healthier alternatives to snacks, etc. into my children’s lives without “force” feeding them?
  4. What is the easiest thing I can do to start this healthy process…in myself and in my children?
There are numerous blogs, websites, experts, and companies that gives you a plethora of information that can overload our brains. Many times, a solution provided by one of these methods often result in spending more money, which may help in the short run but leaves for more issues in the long run. The better question is: How can I make simple lifestyle changes that will affect my future decisions in maintaining health and wellness?

Junk News XIX: ‘Healthy’ foods that can pack on the pounds

I personally had no idea that quinoa can pack on pounds. Dried Fruit is very well-known for packing on pounds because of its sugar content. Nuts and seeds have lots of “good” fats but fat is fat and if it’s not processed by the body properly, it sits there on your gut or your butt.

Fruit smoothies are along the lines of dried fruit…just another way for a lot of sugar to get into your system (same with fruit juices) but hummus? I figured that’s one of the low-calorie ones!!

I just want to mention something about salads. Instead of adding cheese, bacon, or shrimp, try adding other kinds of greens (instead of lettuce) such as watercress, arugula, or even endives. These bitter and sweet greens can add to the flavor of the salad without having to add a meat or fat filled or too much salad dressing (the main culprit behind the increased calories of a salad).

So the ‘moral of the story’ is that moderation is key!! Almonds are super healthy for you…one of the best things you can put in your mouth. But you have enough common sense that too much of anything is no longer healthy and fat enriched foods like nuts  will add to your gain if you eat like 10 handfuls at once!! Don’t go crazy and feel guilty if you eat too much of one of these foods (dried fruit and almonds are my passion). Don’t be so literal in your train of thought. Enjoy your healthy junk and even more so, enjoy your healthy outlook on the junk you consume.

and remember…if you’re gonna consume junk, it might as well be Healthy Junk!
