The Healthy Junk Chronicles: Bulk items are you friend

Let’s face it…healthy foods can be pretty expensive! Sometimes, I feel like I’m buy Louis Vutton instead of “organic”, “all natural”, “grass fed”, “gluten-free” foods. I didn’t post for a while because I was racking my brains trying to figure out the best ways to get you great food…at a budget.

Today, it hit me in the head. BUY BULK! Now I’m sure you heard this before. As a matter of fact, I know you heard buying bulk is the way to go if you want to enjoy organic food but do you know how many items come in bulk, especially if you know where to look?

I thought of this today. I went into one of my favorite food stores in Manhattan, Integral Yoga Natural Foods, craving their Cherry Vanilla Granola. I got the idea from my boyfriend to eat it like cereal (I also have this late love for Rice “Drink”…we’ll talk about that later). I ended up buying $14 worth of the stuff. At first, I was like, “damn this is expensive.” But when I saw how much I put in the bag (a about 4 lbs.), a huge light bulb came over my head.

This is going to last me a super long time and it won’t spoil. Should I really be upset? Especially when this great tasting food is around $5/lb?

I know someone from Brooklyn is saying, “girl, that’s expensive.” Not for NYC!! It’s a damn good price for the West Village and I’m not mad. I then realized how many things I buy in bulk: herbs, rice, pasta, even organic maple syrup! And at the end of the day, I save a lot of money. Hell, I can even get detergent in bulk if I want too (thank goodness for DIY…baking soda, apple cider vinegar, water, lemon juice, etc)!!

So if you want to find out where you can get items in bulk, here’s a quick guide:

Your local food co-op. You’ll be surprised how many food co-ops are popping up throughout NYC. Click here to find out.

Your local health food store/natural market. Integral Yoga Natural Foods and other stores like it know the power of bulk. Sure, they can sell that expensive stuff but if they want repeat customers, they will have bulk in many items. If you don’t see it, ask for it. Trust me, then will go through hell and high water to make sure they get it for you (or at least tell you where to go).

At the end of the day, when you have to deal with mega chains like Whole Foods (also known as Whole Paycheck), competition among smaller stores makes no sense. Whole Foods doesn’t have much when it comes to bulk because they need the big brands to keep them afloat. So support your local store, save money, and still maintain your health.

Thank me later.

The Healthy Junk Chronicles: My Experiment with Junk I

Instead of going through the poetic prose I may use when writing for Fight dis-ease!, I’m just going to come out and say it: I got laid off of my corporate job recently. My official termination date has not approached as yet but I was still going into survival mode. Going in and out of a “funk,” I got the foods that were cheap and easiest. I got junk.

In New York City, there are many food staples – pizza Pizza and hot dogs Hot Dog are at the top of the list. However, in the “hood,” there is one food that soars above the rest…and it’s one of the worst junk foods known to man – 4 Chicken Wings and French Fries (or some kind of Fried Rice) from any Chinese-American Food Store. Chicken Wings w/French Fries

I made a conscious decision to no longer eat pork at 11 years old. I haven’t eaten hog dogs since (so that’s out)! I do eat pizza but since dairy and I don’t get along like we used to (we’ll talk about that later), I couldn’t eat too much of it.

For 9 months, I haven’t eaten chicken. A month ago, I decided to take a break from seafood (I’ll talk about Elimination Diets on Fight dis-ease! in the future). Since taking that break, I started eating chicken again. Now mind you, seafood is NOT fish but for some reason (or another), I came right back to chicken. Continue reading

The Healthy Junk Chronicles: What’s really good?

Hey you! :D

Before I get into the nitty gritty, I wanted to explain a couple of things about Healthy Junk, as well as a little bit about myself.

I have another blog called Fight dis-ease! through Holistic Health, which should be somewhere within this blog. Even though I have fun in there, I try to keep it more on the professional side.

Since this blog is called “Healthy Junk,” you will have to expect another side of me to come out here – the side that is quirky, crazy, and beautifully silly as hell. :) I’ma keep it real with cha! Most definitely. ;)

On the lighter side of health, I’m going to touch lightly on certain topics. A number of them, I’m not going to get into detail about. I’ll refer those detailed items to the Fight dis-ease! site. I’ll try to intertwine the two sites but that won’t be for a while. I got too much to talk about on both sides to get them integrated just yet.

I’m not just going to talk about junk food on this site either. No siree! I’m going to talk about a number of products that you can buy on the cheap. I’m also going to include links to certain websites to get coupons, etc. for your healthy junk. Shoo, junk food is cheap. Even though healthy junk is more expensive, let’s make sure we get as many discounts as we can so we can enjoy our luxurious and healthy junk without regret.

Ask me a question on Healthy Junk…please! I’ll do my best to answer it. I maybe a bit on the harsh side. I might cuss here and there. It’s ok. Let enjoy the ride. Laugh a little. Isn’t that what you do anyway when you eat your regular junk food? :p

We’re gonna take this Healthy Junk Food Bus full throttle. Don’t worry, the ride will be smooth and the driver (that’s me) will give you a nice, guided tour of how you can eat healthier and live healthier, for less.

There is a downside to Healthy Junk. I’m not Ideal Bite. I can’t give you the Chicago, San Francisco, or London  versions of Healthy Junk. Sorry Charlie. :( If I do give any information on food and it’s not a national chain, then it will be local to the NY area…and when I say NY, I mean NYC. So if you’re from Barbados, you betta ask Aunt Jean to send you these items STAT, the next time Cousin Suzette comes to town. :))

Alright folks, that’s it for now. Just to give you a summary of what I have posted, the following things are going to happen on Healthy Junk:

  • NO Yoga talk (from a serious standpoint anyway)
  • NO Professional Mannerisms (unless someone is forcing me to…and I don’t see that happening in MY future!)
  • NO BS (that means BullShit for those who figured I wasn’t going to say it)
  • Lots of good information that will cover your health from head to toe, from the inside out (wait a minute…that’s for my other blog…I’ll leave it here too ;))
  • I may do some complaining here and there. I expect you to do the same.

If you’re gonna have junk, it might as well be HEALTHY JUNK! Laters. b-)
